Recognition of a Category B Driving Licence in Hungary – Step by Step

Where can the procedure be initiated?
The recognition of a driving licence issued by the authority of a third country can be handled exclusively at the Central Government Office (Központi Kormányablak):

When is an exam required?
If your driving licence was issued in a country that is not a signatory to the 1968 Vienna Convention on Road Traffic, the following applies:
- You may drive in Hungary for up to one year from the start of your continuous residence,
- after that period, you must obtain a Hungarian driving licence through a recognition procedure.

- Only a theoretical exam is required if the driving entitlement shown on your foreign licence can be matched to a Hungarian international category.
- Both theoretical and practical driving exams are required if the entitlement cannot be clearly determined or cannot be matched to a Hungarian category.
What should I do if the authority requires me to take an exam without attending a course?
Once you receive the official decision, you should contact a driving school where you can register for the required exam(s), and receive assistance with preparation to ensure a successful result.
Is it mandatory to purchase exam preparation materials or take driving lessons?
It is not mandatory, but it is recommended to increase your chances of passing the exam. If you decide not to purchase learning materials or additional driving lessons, the exam fee must still be paid.
What costs should I expect if I need to take a theoretical and/or practical exam?
Theoretical exam fee: HUF 4,600, Practical (road) exam fee: HUF 11,000
Additional costs may include the fee for exam preparation materials, and the cost of practical driving lessons.
